Will ‘One Uniform’ actually reach students..!!

The school bell has rung across the state of Telangana. With summer vacations ending, schools have reopened. As a result, lakhs of students have returned to classrooms. In this context, expectations have risen regarding the state government’s announced ‘One State – One Uniform’ policy and the special student kit containing ’21 items’ for government school students. The objective is to promote a sense of equality among students, reduce the financial burden on poor families and create a distinct identity for government schools. With the intention of providing textbooks to students on the very first day of the academic year, the government ensured that books reached schools in advance. However, questions are now being raised in educational circles as to why the same priority and speed are not being seen in the distribution of uniforms and kits.
To encourage equality among students studying in government schools and to create a special brand image for public education, the government introduced the ‘One Uniform’ policy. Until now, schools followed different uniform colors, but the government decided to implement a common design across the state. It is believed that this will not only boost students confidence but also provide government schools with a unique identity. To provide students with all necessary educational materials in one place, the government announced a special kit. It will include a total of ’21 items’, such as three pairs of uniform cloth, shoes, socks, school bags, belts, ties, textbooks, notebooks, workbooks, pens, pencils, geometry boxes, dictionaries, and other essentials. If implemented effectively, this kit could significantly reduce the financial burden on poor and middle-class families. Students also would not have to struggle to obtain necessary study materials.
In the past, uniforms were distributed during the initial phase of the academic year itself. Students had the opportunity to begin the new academic year wearing new uniforms. However, this time, despite schools being close to reopening, there appears to be no clarity regarding the distribution of uniforms and kits. Although student measurements have reportedly been collected, there is no official information about the progress of cloth supply, stitching, kit preparation, or distribution processes, which is causing concern. Uniforms, bags, shoes, stationery and other required materials are useful only if they reach students at the beginning of the academic year. If they are distributed months after schools reopen, the scheme may partially fulfill its objective but may fail to achieve the expected results. Moreover, dissatisfaction could increase among parents who enrolled their children in government schools based on the facilities promised by the government. If some parents once again shift toward private schools, it could adversely affect the goal of strengthening public education. The government’s commitment to strengthening public education is certainly commendable. However, timely implementation is what gives true meaning to that commitment. Delays in programs affecting lakhs of students create doubts among the public. Therefore, the government must treat the distribution of uniforms and special kits as an urgent matter and take action on a war footing. A special action plan should be prepared through coordination among all departments to ensure that students receive uniforms and kits alongside textbooks in the initial days of the academic year. Obstacles at the ground level should be removed immediately, and a clear deadline for distribution should be announced and implemented. Ultimately, if the efforts of teachers, the trust placed by parents, and the hopes of students for strengthening government schools are to be rewarded, the government must fulfill its promises without fail. The ‘One Uniform – 21 Item Kit’ should not remain merely an announcement; it will gain true meaning only when it reaches students hands. Therefore, student organizations, teachers and parents are urging the government to take immediate action and complete the distribution of uniforms and kits without further delay.
