A New Breath of Life – Hope Through Lung Transplantation
Hanumakonda, November 7 (Indian Chronicle):
For patients suffering from severe lung diseases that cannot be controlled with medication, lung transplantation is emerging as a life-saving medical procedure. In this process, the damaged lungs of a patient are replaced with healthy lungs from brain-dead donors, allowing patients to breathe freely and live normally again.
Yashoda Hospitals, Hitech City, Hyderabad has become one of the leading centers for lung transplants in India. Successful transplants have been performed here for complex conditions such as Pulmonary Fibrosis, COPD, Bronchiectasis, and Post-COVID Lung Damage.
In a landmark achievement, Yashoda Hospitals performed India’s first successful lung transplant on a patient suffering from lung fibrosis caused by paraquat poisoning. Another remarkable milestone was the successful transplant for a 12-year-old boy, who became the youngest patient in the world to undergo a lung transplant after paraquat-induced lung damage.
These achievements stand as a testament to the hospital’s advanced infrastructure, expert transplant surgeons, pulmonologists, and the dedication of a strong multidisciplinary team, said Dr. Chetan Rao Vaddepalli, Consultant Transplant Pulmonologist, Yashoda Hospitals.
Speaking on the importance of post-transplant care, Dr. Chetan Rao stated:
“Post-transplant infection control, regular follow-ups, rehabilitation, and psychological support are crucial for long-term recovery. Many of our patients are now leading normal lives — pursuing education, careers, and family responsibilities with renewed joy.”
Emphasizing the importance of organ donation, he added:
“One donor can save up to eight lives. If every individual takes a pledge to donate organs, countless others can get a second chance at life.”
“Lung transplantation is not merely a surgical procedure — it is a symbol of hope, compassion, and humanity,” Dr. Chetan Rao concluded.
