The current drought conditions are a reflection of the sentiment expressed in the song, ‘Rain, O rain, O rain, please come at least once, O rain’. In ways that were never imaginable, the state of the rainy season has now become a question mark. Farmers are suffering because of drought conditions that are going astray without any regard for the seasons. Due to various wars, pollution, wildfires in forests like the Amazon, the melting of Arctic sea ice day by day, the shrinking of coastal areas, damage to the ozone layer, and the consequences of merciless human actions, we are witnessing the destruction of nature. We are putting an axe to the mystery of creation that should take place according to the seasons. Scientists and environmentalists are warning that if environmental balance continues to deteriorate in the same way in the near future, unforeseen consequences will occur. In the guise of development and under the pretext of economic self-reliance, we are knowingly causing disruption to nature, which is like a mother.
● The natural seasonal cycle is going astray.
The periods of naturally occurring seasons are going astray. The conditions of the northeast and southwest monsoons are becoming questionable. The winds that spread from low pressure to high pressure and from high pressure to low pressure are becoming erratic. The drought cycle is turning upside down day by day. As a result, although farmers have been preparing for agriculture from the beginning of June, even the rain god is showing no mercy. Although humans are bringing these consequences upon themselves, humans alone are being left with the stain. Because of excessive selfishness, we are inviting unforeseen consequences and becoming an indelible stain on ‘human’ life.
● If there is no agriculture, there will be no support at all.
In agriculture-dependent countries like India, farming is becoming increasingly difficult. If the farmer who provides us with food faces hard times, there will be no one left to feed us. Although farmers are ready to work hard throughout the year, the farmer is struggling helplessly because circumstances and the environment are not cooperating. The farmers who make a living from agriculture are being left with stories of tears. Some farmers are selling the little land they have, leaving agriculture and setting out in search of alternative livelihoods.
● Prices are set to become even more premium due to the rain crisis..??
In today’s fast-paced world, drought conditions have a severe impact, especially on the agricultural sector. As a result, economic experts estimate that the prices of rice and other grains produced by farmers are likely to rise sharply. With supply failing to meet demand in the market, rice as well as essential commodities and other millets are set to become more expensive. Farmers are facing new kinds of losses in agriculture like never before and do not know what to do. Governments need to think with a big heart and provide farmers with strong support. It is the responsibility of governments as well as all people to give priority to agriculture-dependent regions, take stringent measures, and protect agricultural nature.
